On the 13th, Samsung announced that it will support wildfire damage recovery with 3 billion KRW.
Eight Samsung affiliates, including Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, Samsung SDI, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung SDS, Samsung Life Insurance, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, and Samsung C&T, participated in the donation. The funds will be delivered to residents of the affected areas through the Korean Red Cross. The plan is to use the funds for recovery efforts in special disaster areas such as Gangneung, Chungnam, Gyeongbuk, and Jeonnam.
The Samsung affiliates reportedly decided to donate in agreement with the intentions of Lee Jae-yong, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics.
Earlier, in February 2020, Lee donated 30 billion KRW to overcome COVID-19, stating, "Samsung, which has grown with the support of the people, should rightfully share and be together with our society." During the COVID-19 endemic period, he encouraged employees and their families by saying, "In difficult times, let us pay a little more attention to those around us and support each other," and provided COVID-19 relief supplies.
Samsung has donated relief funds and supplies whenever large-scale natural disasters occur domestically and internationally.
In March last year, Samsung contributed 3 billion KRW each for wildfire recovery in Uljin, Gangwon, and Samcheok, and in August of the same year, for heavy rain support in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Gangwon. In February, when a large-scale earthquake occurred in Turkey (T?rkiye), Samsung provided a total of 3 million USD (approximately 3.9 billion KRW) in relief funds and disaster recovery supplies.
