Attendees included Park Hyun-joo, Vice President of Chosun University; Jeong Jin-cheol, Dean of the Graduate School at Chosun University; Bae Sang-hyun, Research Director at Chosun University (Director of the Institute for Basic Science); Lee Ga-young, Team Leader of Research Commercialization Promotion at the Ministry of Science and ICT; and Kim Bong-soo, President of the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology Commercialization.

Following the plaque ceremony, a roundtable meeting was held with participating researchers and students, where discussions were held on the current status of the Graduate School of Science and Technology Commercialization, directions for project development, and program development and operation.

Chosun University was the only institution in the Honam and Jeju regions selected last June for the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Science and Technology Job Promotion Agency’s “Regional Science and Technology Performance Commercialization Support Project.” It will receive a total of approximately 6.9 billion KRW in funding over up to six years until 2027, training 40 master's and doctoral-level specialized personnel in technology commercialization annually.

Through this, it is expected that master's and doctoral graduates who have received specialized education in technology commercialization policy and practice will work locally to drive the growth of regional companies. Chosun University is anticipated to enhance the competitiveness of regional companies and, furthermore, achieve innovation in South Korea’s science and technology sector.

The “Regional Science and Technology Performance Commercialization Support Project (STAR-Academy: Science and Technology Acceleration for Region+Academy)” is a national-level initiative that supports the creation of a science and technology commercialization ecosystem and the establishment and operation of graduate schools that nurture specialized personnel in science and technology commercialization.

In its second year of the project this year, Chosun University has formed the Science and Technology Commercialization Policy Support Group (THINK TANK), centered on optimized internal and external infrastructure and experts from regional innovation institutions for nurturing talent in science and technology commercialization.

In particular, the university is operating policy support groups, commercialization advisory groups, and startup advisory groups, and has also formed a specialized industry council involving companies in smart mobility, renewable energy, and bio-healthcare sectors, which is expected to create synergy.

Additionally, as of 2022, 26 courses have been developed, and the university plans to cultivate specialized personnel in each major through the operation of courses on science and technology policy, practice, and entrepreneurship.

President Min Young-don stated, “We will do our best to ensure that the cultivation of specialized personnel in science and technology commercialization leads the development of regional companies and contributes to the creation of a science and technology ecosystem in the Honam region.”
