The Reperfusion Therapy Stroke Center certification, overseen by the Korean Stroke Society, designates medical institutions equipped with specialized personnel, facilities, equipment, education, and operational systems, as well as quality management of medical services to ensure appropriate treatment and safety for acute stroke patients.
The Stroke Center at Gangneung Asan Hospital performs thrombolytic therapy, which dissolves blood clots using medication, and thrombectomy, which removes clots by inserting instruments into cerebral blood vessels, for acute ischemic stroke patients who require rapid treatment. These procedures are carried out by four cerebrovascular specialists.
Intra-arterial reperfusion therapy for acute ischemic stroke patients requires advanced skills to directly access the blocked blood vessels, necessitating experienced and skilled medical professionals and treatment equipment. Obtaining the Reperfusion Therapy Stroke Center certification signifies the capability to perform these procedures during acute stroke treatment.
A hospital official stated, "To shorten treatment time more effectively for stroke patients, we are striving for specialized stroke care through an integrated cooperative system among related medical staff such as neurosurgery, neurology, and emergency medicine, as well as operating an intensive care unit that monitors patients 24 hours a day and can respond promptly to emergencies."
