Focus on Assessing Whole-Government Level Response

Cho Tae-yong, Director of the National Security Office, emphasized on the 12th that "thorough preparations are necessary to safely protect the energy infrastructure, the lifeline of the national economy, from cyberattacks."


On the same day, Director Cho held a meeting at the Yongsan Presidential Office to review the response posture of each agency in preparation for cyberattacks on the energy sector, stating, "Recently, President Yoon Seok-yeol emphasized the need to thoroughly maintain the response posture to prevent cyber threats to critical infrastructure such as finance and energy from escalating into a security crisis."


The Presidential Office explained that this meeting focused on proactively reviewing the response posture at the government-wide level to prepare for situations where cyberattacks on the energy sector, amid rising cyber security threats domestically and internationally, could threaten national security.

Attendees of the meeting included representatives from energy-related agencies such as the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Korea Electric Power Corporation, Korea Power Exchange, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Korea Southern Power, Korea Gas Corporation, Korea District Heating Corporation, as well as related agencies including the National Intelligence Service, Ministry of Science and ICT, Prosecutor's Office, and National Police Agency.


The meeting reviewed the preventive and response activities of various energy sector agencies and discussed cooperation and response measures with related partner agencies such as the National Intelligence Service, Ministry of Science and ICT, Prosecutor's Office, and National Police Agency in the event of crisis situations like large-scale hacking incidents.


In particular, it was agreed that related ministries and agencies will continuously cooperate to secure strong 'resilience' that can restore energy infrastructure in the shortest possible time even in the worst-case cyberattack scenarios such as information system destruction.


The National Security Office stated that it plans to strengthen government-wide inspection activities in the future to protect major infrastructure directly linked to citizens' lives and the national economy.
