The Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education will operate a customized program called ‘Alternative Classroom within School’ this year at 90 elementary, middle, and high schools in the district for students at risk of academic disengagement and other academic difficulties.
‘Alternative Classroom within School’ is a program that has been running since 2013, designed for students at risk of academic dropout. It operates alternative education for 2 to 4 hours per week in a separate classroom within the school, replacing part of the regular curriculum to help resolve school maladjustment and prevent academic dropout.
This year, the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education will run the ‘Alternative Classroom within School’ program at 90 schools, including 40 elementary schools, 45 middle schools, and 5 high schools, providing up to 4 million KRW per school depending on the scale of operation, totaling 310 million KRW in support.
The main programs include counseling and healing activities, community experience activities such as peer relationship improvement, learning and self-development activities, career and job development activities, and team-based integrated project activities. Additionally, each school plans to open various customized programs for students at risk to help them build self-esteem.
Along with this, to ensure smooth operation of the ‘Alternative Classroom within School’ program this year, a research council meeting will be held on the 12th at 2 p.m. at the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education Happiness Hall, targeting about 90 people including those in charge of operating the alternative classrooms. The meeting will discuss tasks related to the alternative classrooms within schools, share best practices in operation, and deliberate on the composition and operational direction of this year’s research council.
Kang Eun-hee, Superintendent of Daegu Education, said, “We will continuously support our students who face difficulties in school life by providing various alternative education programs suited to their talents and aptitudes, so that they can enjoy educational activities with their friends and grow healthily as members of society.”
