Support of 10,000 KRW Onnuri Gift Certificates for Residents Donating Blood (Whole Blood) at the Blood Donation Center near Konkuk University Station
Despite the Decline in COVID-19 Spread, Blood Supply Remains Insufficient... Creating an Active Atmosphere for Blood Donation Participation
Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) provides 10,000 KRW Onnuri Gift Certificates to residents who donate blood at the local blood management institution (Blood Donation Center near Konkuk University Station).
Since donated blood cannot be stored for a long time, continuous and steady blood donation is necessary to maintain an adequate blood supply of five days' worth.
As the number of blood donors continued to decline due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the district established a legal basis at the end of 2021 to support donors with a budget, and from April 2022, launched the ‘Resident Blood Donation Encouragement Project’ that provides Onnuri Gift Certificates to residents who donate whole blood.
As a result of the project, whole blood donation performance increased by 14.2%, which helped improve the blood supply situation.
To foster a more active blood donation atmosphere in the community, this year the district will support a total of 3,000 Onnuri Gift Certificates, an increase of 1,000 certificates compared to the previous year.
The support targets residents registered in Gwangjin-gu who donate whole blood (all blood components including red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets) rather than component blood donation at the Blood Donation Center near Konkuk University Station.
One 10,000 KRW gift certificate is provided per donation, limited to three times per person annually, and the program will end early once the gift certificates are exhausted.
Currently, the domestic blood supply is at a four-day level, and despite the recent decline in COVID-19 spread, the blood supply remains insufficient.
Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said, “I hope this project will spread the spirit of respecting life and a culture of warm sharing,” and added, “We ask for the active participation of all residents to stabilize the blood supply.”
