Jeju Coast Guard Conducts Marine Autonomous Defense Team Training and Education

Jeju Maritime Police Station (Chief Lee Sang-in) announced on the 11th that from the 11th to the 14th, education and training for initial response to marine pollution accidents will be conducted at the offices of each fishing village cooperative, starting with the Donggwi Fishing Village Cooperative Marine Volunteer Defense Corps and including three areas such as Gwakji Fishing Village Cooperative.


The Marine Volunteer Defense Corps is a civilian volunteer organization composed of local fishermen who voluntarily carry out defense duties when a marine pollution accident occurs.

Currently, in the Jeju sea area, a total of 17 Marine Volunteer Defense Corps units are active, with 178 personnel and 47 vessels.


The content of this education and training includes introducing major accident response cases of the Marine Volunteer Defense Corps in 2022, instructions on the use of marine pollution defense equipment and materials, sharing key defense methods for fire and stranded vessel defense operations, and other methods to improve initial response capabilities to marine pollution accidents.


A Jeju Maritime Police official stated, “We will continuously conduct education and training to enhance the defense expertise of the Marine Volunteer Defense Corps, further strengthening the capacity to respond to pollution accidents in the jurisdictional waters, and work together with the public and government to create a clean sea.”
