Prosecutor Appointee Drinks Alcohol, Hits Police Officer's Head, Assault... First Trial Suspended Sentence

A woman in her 30s, who was about to be appointed as a prosecutor, was indicted for assaulting a police officer and received a suspended sentence in the first trial.

The court explained, "Considering the defendant's testimony and the evidence as a whole, guilt is recognized," but added, "Taking into account the confession and remorse, the fact that this is a first offense, and the police officer's request for leniency, the sentence was determined."

A was prosecuted for hitting a police officer twice on the head while arguing, "Why are you only taking their side?" when police who responded to an assault report at a restaurant area in Gangnam, Seoul, in the early morning of January 30 arrived. At that time, the police reportedly responded to a 112 call reporting, "An unknown woman hit us."

A had passed the final selection for new prosecutors last year and was scheduled to be appointed as a prosecutor once notified of passing the bar exam later this month.

The Ministry of Justice excluded A from the pre-appointment training at the Judicial Research and Training Institute immediately after the incident occurred. The Ministry stated, "This is a serious issue that prevents becoming a prosecutorial official," and explained, "Necessary procedures, including convening a personnel committee, are already underway, and appointment will not proceed according to the procedures."
