On the 11th at 10:30 AM, Busan City will sign a business agreement with the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education and Busan Cultural Center in the International Protocol Room on the 7th floor of City Hall to promote the ‘Student Cultural Performance Viewing Support Project: Eoriljeokye (藝)’ to provide opportunities for elementary, middle, and high school students to attend cultural performances.
Eoriljeokye (藝) is a combination of “Eoriljeok” (childhood) and “Art,” meaning that experiencing art from an early age is very important.
So far, the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education has supported cultural performance viewing fees for elementary, middle, and high school students through the ‘Happiness-filled Art Bundle’ project and allocated budgets to frontline schools. However, there has been a severe shortage of performances available during morning class hours for approximately 660 local elementary, middle, and high schools, and non-expert teachers have faced difficulties selecting suitable performances to watch.
Additionally, local art organizations have found it challenging to actively participate in the project due to a lack of information, the need for individual visits and promotion at each school, difficulties securing performance venues, and concerns about uncertain future viewership following production.
Accordingly, Busan City, the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, and Busan Cultural Center recognized the need for close and friendly cooperation to promote the ‘Student Cultural Performance Viewing Support Project: Eoriljeokye (藝)’ to expand students’ artistic experiences, leading to this agreement.
Upon signing the agreement, ▲ Busan City will allocate 200 million KRW in supplementary budget this year and, together with Busan Cultural Center, will hold a market at the BEXCO Exhibition Hall in November to promote Eoriljeokye. At the market, over 20 outstanding works jointly selected by Busan City and the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, along with performances submitted by various art organizations, will be showcased to support frontline schools in easily selecting and viewing performances.
Furthermore, ▲ the Metropolitan Office of Education will actively guide frontline schools to attend performances by art organizations participating in the market. Selected works will be placed in regional theaters starting in 2024 to enable students to watch them during class hours.
Works submitted to the market will be collected until October from public and private organizations. Afterwards, an expert panel will review the submissions, considering student levels and whether the performances are linked to the curriculum, prioritizing outstanding works and supporting the submitted pieces.
Also, since venue reservations and rentals typically begin six months in advance, the city plans to prioritize venue rentals from the second half of this year and, starting in 2024, will continue to strengthen cooperation with private theaters in districts and counties to ensure local art organizations face no difficulties using performance venues.
Moreover, a consultative body centered on the agreement institutions will be formed for this project to not only support student cultural performance viewing but also utilize various content owned by Busan City in art classes, expand programs linked to local art resources, and discover various cooperative projects.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun stated, “Art experiences in childhood greatly influence cultural and artistic enjoyment in adulthood, so their importance is even greater.” He added, “Through this project, we expect to provide students with diverse art experience opportunities to foster their growth as future cultural citizens and to offer local art organizations stable opportunities for artistic activities, laying the foundation for autonomous growth.”
Busan Cultural Center, which has a municipal art troupe participating in producing some student-tailored performances, owns performance venues, and maintains cooperative systems with district and county cultural centers (performance halls), has strengths in project implementation and has been entrusted to carry out this project.
