Gwangyang City Council Issues Statement Urging POSCO for Regional Win-Win Cooperation

Establishing Local Win-Win Cooperation Plans and Fulfilling the Role of Corporate Citizens

The Gwangyang City Council of Jeollanam-do (Chairman Seo Young-bae) held a council members' meeting on the 3rd and issued a statement urging POSCO to promote regional win-win cooperation.

In the statement, the city council pointed out, "Last year, the POSCO Group launched POSCO Holdings, an investment-type holding company, but in the process, it thoroughly excluded the citizens of Gwangyang who have sacrificed their environment and health rights."

Furthermore, it strongly criticized, "Although it has been a year since the Gwangyang Regional Win-Win Cooperation Council was formed under the value of mutual growth between POSCO and the region, they have yet to even create a win-win cooperation agreement. Considering cases such as frequent environmental pollution caused by the inflow of pollutants into the sea from the raw material pier of the Gwangyang Steelworks, it is doubtful whether POSCO is qualified to talk about corporate citizenship and ESG management philosophy."

In response, the city council stated, "If POSCO does not change its attitude, we will consider withdrawing from the Win-Win Cooperation Council and seek solutions with the local community to derive practical cooperation measures."

Meanwhile, the Gwangyang City Council urged POSCO to ▲actively participate in the Gwangyang Regional Win-Win Cooperation Council and prepare effective regional win-win cooperation plans, and ▲firmly fulfill its role as a corporate citizen by hiring local talent, utilizing local companies, and strengthening communication with the local community.

The city council also demanded that POSCO Holdings ▲actively invest in Gwangyang in future new businesses such as secondary batteries and hydrogen.
