Statistics Korea's February Online Shopping Trends

Last month, the online shopping transaction amount was recorded at 16.9369 trillion KRW. With the easing of social distancing measures, outdoor activities increased and online grocery shopping continued to grow, resulting in an increase of 1.1877 trillion KRW (7.5%) compared to the same month last year.

According to Statistics Korea's "February Online Shopping Trends" released on the 3rd, transaction amounts for travel and transportation services increased by 137.4%. Notable growth was also seen in food and groceries (8.3%) and e-coupon services (29.7%). The transaction amount for general malls was 10.7042 trillion KRW, and for specialty malls, it was 6.2327 trillion KRW, marking increases of 5.7% and 10.8% respectively during the same period. The transaction amount for online malls was 13.0931 trillion KRW, up 4.7%, while the transaction amount for on-offline hybrid malls was 3.8437 trillion KRW, increasing by 18.4%, showing a faster growth rate.


Compared to the previous month, telecommunications devices (35.5%) increased, but food and groceries (-16.9%) and agricultural, livestock, and fishery products (-32.2%) sectors recorded declines.


The industry with the highest proportion of mobile shopping transaction amount within online shopping transactions was food services. Of the total online transaction amount, 98.2% came from mobile. Children's and infant products followed with 82.5%, and pet products came next at 80.2%.
