On the 21st, the Asan Social Welfare Foundation held the 16th Asan Medical Awards ceremony and announced that it would award a total prize money of 700 million KRW to four recipients: Professor Jeon Jang-su (63) and Professor Kang Yoon-gu (66) each receiving 300 million KRW, and Professor Jeong Chung-won (39) and Professor Park Se-hoon (34) each receiving 50 million KRW.
Professor Jeon Jang-su of the Department of Life Sciences at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), selected as the winner in the basic medical science category, was recognized for his world-class research elucidating the molecular biological causes of degenerative arthritis, leading the field of basic research on degenerative arthritis.
Professor Kang Yoon-gu, a professor in the Department of Oncology at Seoul Asan Medical Center and the winner in the clinical medical science category, was highly evaluated for his global research achievements, including establishing standards in chemotherapy treatment for gastric cancer and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) through various domestic and international clinical studies.
Professor Jeong Chung-won of the Department of Life Sciences at Seoul National University, awarded in the young medical scientist category for medical scientists under 40, was recognized for his achievements as a population geneticist who identified characteristics of various ethnic groups and provided fundamental genetic information necessary for the advancement of personalized medicine.
Professor Park Se-hoon of the Department of Nephrology at Seoul National University Hospital was acknowledged for his research achievements proving causal relationships between kidney diseases and other diseases through genome and big data analysis studies.
The Asan Foundation has established the Asan Medical Development Fund worth 40 billion KRW to promote the development of medical science in Korea, supporting the Asan Medical Awards and the research activities of the awardees.
The Asan Medical Awards were established in 2008 to encourage outstanding domestic and international medical scientists who have achieved remarkable accomplishments in the fields of basic and clinical medical sciences.
