A woman in her 40s was urgently arrested on charges of injuring a neighbor with a stun gun during a dispute over noise between floors.
The Suwon Southern Police Station in Gyeonggi announced on the 21st, as reported by Yonhap News Agency, that they have urgently arrested and are investigating Ms. A on charges of special assault.
The charge of special assault applies when an assault is committed with a weapon, resulting in a heavier penalty. Moreover, unlike simple assault, it is not a crime that can be dropped by the victim’s consent, so even if a settlement is reached, criminal responsibility cannot be avoided.
Ms. A is accused of injuring Ms. B, a woman in her 50s living upstairs, with a stun gun during a verbal dispute over noise between floors at an apartment on the first floor in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon City, around 3:40 p.m. that day. She allegedly used a stun gun, authorized under her husband’s name for self-defense, to shock Ms. B’s body and also assaulted her with fists, causing injury.
The police responded to a report from Ms. B stating, "I was injured by a stun gun used by the downstairs neighbor," and after analyzing closed-circuit CCTV footage, they found evidence supporting Ms. A’s charges and made an urgent arrest.
Ms. A denied the charges, stating, "I usually carry the stun gun for self-defense. I did take it out during the dispute, but it was turned off."
Ms. B is currently receiving hospital treatment. It was revealed that they had frequent disputes over noise between floors, and there had been several previous related reports.
A police official stated, "The severity of the crime may vary depending on whether the stun gun was actually activated."
