'The Phantom of the Opera' Returns to Korea After 13 Years
Performances Start in Busan from March Next Year, Then Seoul from July
Preserving the Original Premiere's Atmosphere as Much as Possible
[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] The musical "The Phantom of the Opera," which has captivated 145 million people worldwide, is coming to Korean audiences. It will be performed in Korean for the first time in 13 years, visiting Busan and Seoul.
The performances will begin at Busan Dream Theater from March 30 to June 18, followed by a run at Seoul Charlotte Theater starting July 14.
The sets and costumes will be produced exactly as the original designs and scale from the Broadway premiere. The sets are based on Maria Bj?rnson's original designs from 1988, enhanced with advanced technical elements. The production recreates the thrilling moment of the one-ton chandelier plunging over the audience, delivering the same impact as the original premiere. The mask design incorporates 3D technology.
"The Phantom of the Opera" is a symbolic work that expanded the base of the domestic musical market. It introduced the latest systems in production, sales, and marketing to the Korean performing arts industry. It attracted 240,000 viewers in 2001, 330,000 in 2009, and surpassed one million viewers in 2012.
