[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] 'MyShipDan,' a diet meal recommendation and delivery solution, has successfully secured funding. Despite a contraction in venture capital (VC) investment sentiment, securing significant funds is expected to accelerate its growth momentum.
According to the investment banking (IB) industry on the 6th, BunkerKids, the operator of the MyShipDan service, raised 2 billion KRW in a Series A round. This round included participation from Kakao Ventures, Rising S Ventures, and Spring Camp, among others. They have secured 2 billion KRW initially and are currently raising additional funds.
An investor representative said, "Basically, the team members have outstanding capabilities and cohesion," adding, "Their obsession with customers and data-driven thinking skills are among the top in Korea, which led us to invest."
BunkerKids' MyShipDan is a personalized nutrition solution aimed at achieving health goals. It provides diet solutions based on nutritional theory. The company started as a sole proprietorship in January 2019 and is led by members who have experienced launching and failing five items and a small exit (investment recovery).
BunkerKids generated meaningful user responses through its previous item, the home fitness service 'Fitness Diving.' Along with positive feedback, it recorded monthly sales exceeding 100 million KRW. Subsequently, in July 2021, it raised external funds. POSTECH Technology Holdings and Pusan National University Technology Holdings participated in the seed round.
Later that year, in October, the company pivoted to the MyShipDan service, solidifying its identity. At the same time, it was selected for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' TIPS program, raising its profile. The business was then formalized with the launch of the MyShipDan web prototype and Android and iOS applications.
MyShipDan recommends and delivers effective and sustainable diets based on artificial intelligence (AI). After installing the app and linking it with a Kakao account, users are guided to record their weight, height, BMI, and usual exercise levels. Upon entering a target weight, the app provides the estimated time required to reach the goal and recommended nutrients.
Users can then create a personalized diet by inputting preferred meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), allergy foods, disliked foods, and preferred diet types (bread, rice, noodles, snacks). If there is a menu item they do not want to eat, they can press the 'Change' button to receive a product with similar nutritional content.
The repurchase rate within two weeks after purchasing MyShipDan exceeds 50%, which is significantly higher than competitors. This is evaluated as building a strong customer 'lock-in' effect centered on personalized diets.
