[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] The Department of Physical Education at National Mokpo University in Jeonnam has been selected for the '2022 KUSF Student Athlete Dodream Program Operation Support Project,' organized by the Korea University Sports Federation and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation.

The 'KUSF Student Athlete Dodream Program' is a project that supports academic management for student athletes who balance academics and sports, based on tutoring activities where student athletes and general students work together in groups.

Considering the operation status of university sports teams, the program consists of three parts: Dodream-Eum (student tutoring), Dodream-Baeum (team tutoring), and Dodream-Hamkke (double tutoring). It is operated and supported with the goals of academic management and adaptation to university life for student athletes, as well as promoting an open university sports culture through exchanges between student athletes and general students.

Specifically, student tutoring involves general students supporting student athletes in learning related to assignments and classes to strengthen their academic capabilities. Team tutoring supports student athletes in adapting well to university life through general students’ assistance with school life, and graduate students support academic performance to enhance academic capabilities.

Lastly, double tutoring aims to strengthen the social skills of student athletes by having student athletes and general students mutually teach each other in their confident fields.

Professor Park Hee-seok of the Department of Physical Education at Mokpo University, the project director, said, “Through this program, we have systematically provided various fields of education, including special lectures on career paths, exercise prescriptions, rehabilitation, and professional training for student athletes in practical sports such as volleyball, basketball, and kendo, as well as studies in English, computer skills, and professional sports certifications, which were areas where students felt academic deficiencies.” He added, “We will take the lead in creating a healthier university sports environment at Mokpo University through this program.”

Team leader Lee In-hwan, who is in charge of the project, stated, “As a former volleyball player, I know that student athletes have been isolated within their own culture on campus.” He continued, “Through this program, we will do our best to provide practical support by improving the academic environment for student athletes, supporting their academic management, strengthening learning capabilities, enhancing adaptation to school life, and creating opportunities for exchanges between student athletes and general students.”
