[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] Although there are approximately 300,000 non-residential households in Seoul, the performance of housing upgrade support projects targeting them amounted to only 2,349 households over two years. In particular, Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH), under the Seoul Metropolitan Government, supplied 533 households, which has been criticized as relatively insufficient.
According to the "Annual Housing Upgrade Performance for Non-Residential Residents" received by Choi In-ho, a member of the National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, from the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the 14th, the supply performance of rental housing in Seoul was 680 households in 2020 and 1,669 households in 2021, totaling 2,349 households over two years.
Among them, Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) supplied a total of 1,816 households, and SH supplied 533 households. SH's supply is about 29% of the volume supplied by LH.
This project was officially implemented in 2020 to support housing upgrades for vulnerable housing groups. SH and LH are supplying public rental housing. LH supplied 461 households in 2020 and 1,355 households in 2021, increasing the supply volume by more than 200%. However, SH supplied 219 households and 314 households during the same period.
The number of applicants is increasing every year, but the move-in completion results are also minimal. In 2020, related consultations at the Seoul Housing Welfare Center were 12,188 cases, but last year they more than doubled to 32,629 cases. Applications for housing upgrades also increased from 1,218 cases in 2020 to 2,632 cases in 2021, but with 680 households and 1,669 households moving in respectively, the number of people waiting to move in also increased. It was recorded as 538 cases in 2020 and 963 cases last year.
Representative Choi said, "Given the concentration of vulnerable housing groups in Seoul, the performance of the Seoul Metropolitan Government over the past two years and that of SH, a public institution under the Seoul Metropolitan Government, seems quite insufficient," adding, "System improvements are necessary."
