According to the Mokpo Coast Guard on the 26th, at 9:31 PM on the 24th, a report was received that vessel A (9.77 tons, coastal gillnet, no crew onboard), moored at the Bukhang pier in Mokpo City, was flooded after being caught on the quay wall.
The Coast Guard immediately dispatched rescue teams including the local police station and the West Sea Special Rescue Unit to the scene, and moved three vessels moored alongside vessel A.
Upon arrival, the Coast Guard confirmed that the engine room and fish hold of vessel A were submerged and immediately began dewatering operations using pumps, while reinforcing vessel A’s mooring lines to prevent sinking and other secondary accidents.
A total of seven dewatering pumps were operated that day, completing the operation at 1:22 AM on the 25th. Inspection of vessel A’s hull revealed no breaches.
At around noon on the 25th, vessel A was towed by a tugboat arranged by the owner to a shipyard within the Mokpo Sapjin Industrial Complex.
A Mokpo Coast Guard official stated, “No marine pollution was found as a result of the flooding incident,” and urged, “Ship owners and related parties should regularly conduct safety inspections on vessels moored within the port.”
