[Asia Economy Reporter Minwoo Lee] A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Taiwan.

On the 18th (local time), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred in Taiwan at 2:44 PM (local time).

The earthquake occurred 86 km east of Yujing in the southeast. The depth of the quake was 10 km.

According to major foreign media, the United States Tsunami Warning Center (TWC) issued a tsunami warning for Taiwan following the earthquake observation.

Earlier, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Taitung County in eastern Taiwan the previous night. This caused shaking throughout Taiwan, and by around noon that day, about 63 aftershocks, including a magnitude 5.5 quake, continued.

Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency also announced that a 1-meter-high tsunami is expected in the Miyakojima and Yaeyama regions of Okinawa Prefecture in relation to the Taiwan earthquake.
