원본보기 아이콘[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Pyeonghwa] LG is developing an artificial intelligence (AI) service in collaboration with Parsons School of Design, one of the world's top three design schools, to create unprecedented designs. The plan is to introduce a creative AI platform that helps designers produce innovative designs.
On the 12th (local time), LG AI Research Institute announced on the 13th that it signed the "LG-Parsons Creative AI Research Partnership" at Parsons' campus in New York, USA, and plans to showcase various creative activities over the next three years.
LG AI Research Institute will jointly research generative AI technologies and methodologies applicable in design and art fields based on the super-large AI EXAONE, together with Parsons, which hosts the world's top experts in fashion and media. The results of this joint research will be used to advance an "AI service that collaborates with professional designers and artists."
LG AI Research Institute is conducting mid- to long-term joint research with Parsons to develop new design methodologies beyond visualizing professional designers' ideas through 'EXAONE Atelier.'
EXAONE Atelier is a creative platform developed by LG AI Research Institute that enables designers to collaborate with AI to generate creative designs. The name is a compound word including LG's super-large AI EXAONE and 'Atelier,' meaning a workspace for designers, developed to allow designers to visualize ideas lingering in their minds as visual images. When designers record their experiences, feelings, and thoughts about various forms of information encountered in daily life?such as photos, drawings, voice, and videos?onto the platform, EXAONE learns from this data.
EXAONE, the brain of EXAONE Atelier, has learned over 350 million high-resolution images combined with text, enabling it to understand the context of language and create new images that have never existed before. It can generate 256 high-resolution images in just 7 minutes from a single sentence.
Kim Seunghwan, Vision Lab Head at LG AI Research Institute, said, “Designers will be able to build their own creative design concepts by repeatedly creating images that have never existed before with EXAONE.” He added, “The collaboration between AI and humans goes beyond simply generating fascinating images; we want to explore how far designers' creativity can develop and practically contribute to their artistic activities.”
Cynthia Lawson Haramillo, Dean of Parsons School of Design Strategies, stated, “There is nothing more future-oriented than exploring the intersection of art, design, creativity, and AI through this partnership.” She expressed great anticipation about how Parsons School of Design Strategies members will change through this collaboration and what outcomes they will produce.
In February, LG showcased the potential for collaboration between AI and humans through the AI artist 'Tilda' at New York Fashion Week. Starting with Parsons, LG plans to continue collaborations with renowned design schools and companies domestically and internationally to expand the creative AI ecosystem.

Researchers from LG AI Research Institute, along with Parsons faculty and alumni, will share cases where AI is actually being used in the arts. The event will also include discussions on future research directions and possibilities for utilizing AI in creative fields.
LG AI Research Institute will also conduct a hackathon using EXAONE Atelier. Parsons students will work on design concepts they want to realize using EXAONE Atelier over two days starting on the 17th and then present their results. LG AI Research Institute plans to expand the hackathon globally, increasing participating schools across the United States and Europe.
Baek Gyeonghun, Head of LG AI Research Institute, said, “Through collaboration with Parsons, we aim to create AI design experts who help maximize human creativity and productivity.” He added, “We will continue research to develop EXAONE Atelier into a global platform, not just as an AI that draws pictures, but as an expert AI that breathes with designers and best understands and expresses their thoughts.”
