[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] Hyundai Department Store will showcase a large number of 'upcycling goods' such as bags and pouches made by reprocessing used banners, jeans, and leather scraps to mark 'Resource Circulation Day' on the 6th.

Hyundai Department Store announced on the 5th that it will hold the 'Hyundai Department Store Upcycling Goods Launch Promotion' from the 6th to the 25th, featuring a total of 16 types of upcycling products in the ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) specialized online section 'Re;Green' on its official online mall The Hyundai.com.

Previously, in October last year, Hyundai Department Store introduced five types of 'Green Friends Fashion Bags' made from about 30 large banners weighing approximately 1t that were hung on the exterior walls of the store, the first in the department store industry. This year, not only waste banners but also jeans donated by customers and leather scraps generated by fabric processing partners were used as recycled materials. A Hyundai Department Store official said, "While increasing the types and quantities of products using banners is important, we wanted to emphasize the meaning of resource circulation involving customers and partners," adding, "Customers and partners who sympathized with the purpose actively expressed their willingness to participate." The jeans donation, initially limited to the first 1,000 applicants, was closed on the first day of application (October 12 last year), and an additional 500 were accepted. For this upcycling goods production, 18 waste banners (about 540 kg), 4,000 used jeans (about 1,200 kg), and 482㎡ of leather scraps (about 147 kg) were utilized.

Each material underwent processes such as high-temperature washing, drying, coating, and compression to make them recyclable, and were reborn as messenger bags, cross bags, tumbler bags, pouches, wallets, tissue cases, wine cases, table mats, mouse pads, and more. The selling price ranges from 10,000 to 45,000 KRW, and 10,000 plus points are provided for purchases over 100,000 KRW. A Hyundai Department Store official said, "Previously, waste banners, discarded jeans, and leather were incinerated or landfilled, but by recycling them into new products, we were able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 14t, which is equivalent to the amount of air purified by about 2,000 pine trees in one year," adding, "We plan to continue various upcycling projects utilizing diverse waste resources."
