[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] A creative stage presenting 90s K-pop and Pakistani traditional music as gugak (Korean traditional music) is coming to the audience.
The National Gugak Center announced on the 30th that it will hold the planned performance series "Sympathy Era" by creative artists on the Pungnyu Sarangbang stage 10 times from September 14 to October 20.
This performance is composed of September shows centered on vocal and instrumental performers and October shows featuring dance and yeonhui (traditional Korean performance arts).
The first stage of "Sympathy Era" in September will be decorated with two creative performances based on traditional vocal music. On September 14, sorikkun (traditional Korean singer) Park Inhye will present highlights from the recently popular "Over the Ttechang: Munjeon Bonpuri," for which she took charge of adaptation, direction, lyrics, composition, and music supervision. On the 15th, young singers An Jeonga and Jang Myeongseo will remake Western art songs and 90s K-pop through jeongga vocal techniques.
The September 20 stage by two groups pursuing a unique freedom through gugak also draws attention. The group "TAAL," which crosses borders by adding our traditional music styles Gyeong and Seodo sori to Pakistani traditional music Qawwali, will present a distinctive performance. The ensemble Sinawi stage with master Kim Deoksu on janggu will freely express excitement and joy through "Sinawi on the Road," harmonizing under the theme of improvisation.
On September 21, a unique music created by unfamiliar but attractive instruments such as cheolhyeongeum, bipa, and yanggeum will be introduced. It is a meeting of cheolhyeongeum and unra, which feel delicate yet powerful and precise; bipa, which seems like embracing and conversing with a loved one; and yanggeum, which carries the charm of exciting percussion and brilliant melodies from string instruments. Han Solip, a cheolhyeongeum and unra player and creator, Jeong Youngbeom, the first male bipa player in Korea, and yanggeum player Yoon Eunhwa will perform together.
On September 22, artists who create new genres through the harmony of gugak and Western instruments mainly in Europe and the United States will come together. The meeting of gayageum and harp "1247," the harmony of haegeum and viola "Jul Ensemble," and the combination of violin and janggu "SaaWee" will take the stage. These three teams, discovered through the music video "Gugak In Project" produced earlier by the National Gugak Center to promote domestic and international gugak content, will meet the audience directly on stage beyond the screen through this performance.
