[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province has established the first-ever 'Sports Human Rights Center' among local governments nationwide.

On the 28th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it had set up the 'Sports Human Rights Center' on the 20th floor of the Gwanggyo New Government Building in Yeongtong, Suwon, becoming the first local government in the country to do so, and assigned three experts specializing in psychological counseling and sports human rights to the center.

The center operates a window for reporting or consulting on sports human rights violations and corruption from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.

Reports must concern athletes, coaches, or other matters related to Gyeonggi Province, but reporters or consultees do not need to be residents of the province.

Experts provide counseling, investigate secondary damages, and connect legal and medical support. If the reporter wishes, 'visiting counseling' is also available.

The center has established a cooperative system with the Gyeonggi Province Sports Council, Gyeonggi Province Disabled Sports Council, the provincial government’s Legal Affairs Office, and the Mental Health Division to provide comprehensive legal and psychological counseling support for victims.

It is also responsible for 'visiting sports human rights education,' where specialized instructors are dispatched to the field. Additionally, to improve the rights and interests of sports workers through fair contracts, a Gyeonggi Province-type standard contract for recreational sports instructors will be prepared by the end of the year.

Detailed surveys on sports human rights will be regularly conducted for athletes and coaches, as well as for non-disabled and disabled athletes.

Kim Hyun-soo, Director of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, emphasized, "With the enforcement of the Basic Sports Act in June this year, sports human rights have become a fundamental right enjoyed not only by sports workers and athletes but also by the residents. We will strive to lead this trend and widely promote the value of sports human rights through the Gyeonggi Province Sports Human Rights Center."
