[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] As Indonesia's smart city projects are gaining momentum, Korean companies with technological expertise have been given new opportunities.

On the 25th, KOTRA announced that from the 21st for two days, it held a smart city product briefing and local government demonstration event in Surabaya, Indonesia, together with three innovative future technology SMEs, featuring ▲intelligent LED streetlight systems ▲smart bulbs ▲small electric vehicle fast-charging smart poles. The product briefing was attended by procurement and project managers as well as engineering firms from over 30 major local governments in East Java, Indonesia.

This smart city project support activity was planned to assist domestic SMEs that have faced difficulties in pioneering the market due to ▲low brand awareness ▲lack of local project information ▲challenges in discovering new business partners ahead of entering the Indonesian ICT market.

Indonesia is the fastest-growing ICT market in the ASEAN region, with a digital economy size of approximately $42.4 billion as of 2021. Among its cities, Madiun, located in East Java, is the second most competitive city after Jakarta and is also attracting attention as a promising investment destination.

The consortium-participating SMEs held meetings with the Madiun local government, directly introducing their businesses and proposing solutions to key project managers, and conducted on-site demonstrations of smart streetlight technology. As part of a national project, Indonesia has established a plan to install a total of 3.5 million LED streetlights by 2030.

If the project is awarded, about 7,400 streetlights applying our companies' smart LED technology will be installed over 300,000 km in the Madiun area, amounting to approximately $6.8 million.

Kim Jun-sung, head of KOTRA Surabaya Trade Center, stated, "Major Indonesian projects that were postponed for two years due to COVID-19 are now resuming. Given the high demand for infrastructure such as smart city construction and energy savings through new technologies, we will actively support the market entry of our innovative technology companies."
