[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province announced on the 6th that it has uncovered a total of 27 cases of illegal fishing activities, including operating with unauthorized fishing gear, during crackdowns on illegal fishing in coastal waters and major rivers and streams within the province during the spring spawning season for fish and shellfish.

The crackdown was conducted jointly by the province, city and county authorities, and the West Sea Fisheries Management Team over two months in May and June, covering major marine areas within the province as well as inland waters such as the Namhan River, Bukhan River, Tando Lake, and Namyang Lake.

Major violations detected include ▲ fishing without permission using fishing gear such as coastal improved fixed nets, traps, and gill nets (10 cases) ▲ violations related to storage and distribution of illegally caught seafood (7 cases) ▲ capturing prohibited species during the closed season (3 cases) ▲ fishing with motorized boats (3 cases).

In marine areas, under the Fisheries Act, those who fish without permission may face imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to 30 million won. Additionally, those who store illegally caught fishery products may be subject to imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of up to 20 million won.

For inland waters, under the Inland Fisheries Act, individuals who fish without permission, possess, distribute, or sell illegally caught seafood, or capture fishery resources during the prohibited period may face imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million won.

The province stated that it will take strict measures including immediate legal action against illegal fishing detected during this joint crackdown, in accordance with relevant laws. Administrative sanctions such as cancellation of fishing permits and suspension of fishing activities will also be imposed.

Kim Seong-gon, Director of the Marine Fisheries Division of the province, emphasized, "Illegal fishing during the spawning season causes more harm than benefit, including depletion of fishery resources. We will strive to eradicate illegal fishing for sustainable management of fishery resources."
