[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 23rd that it will conduct the Gwangju Safety Inspection from the 27th of this month to the 15th of next month.

The Gwangju Safety Inspection was first introduced nationwide by Gwangju City in 2018 and is an annual special safety inspection in which the city independently selects safety inspection theme facilities for that year.

This year, about 200 locations including road stormwater drains, summer playground facilities, and social welfare facilities will be intensively inspected.

In particular, this year, leisure activities of citizens are expected to increase following the lifting of social distancing measures.

Accordingly, the safety of 60 multi-use facilities such as swimming pools, campgrounds, and amusement facilities, the electrical and fire safety of 100 social welfare facilities, and the drainage status of 39 road stormwater drains in habitual flood-prone areas to prepare for concentrated summer heavy rains will be focused on.

In preparation for the June rainy season and the concentrated heavy rains from July to September, accumulated waste such as garbage and fallen leaves around stormwater drains in habitual flood-prone road areas will be removed, and disaster prevention activities such as attaching location indication stickers to stormwater drains to quickly clear blockages in case of flooding will also be carried out.

To ensure the effectiveness and expertise of the inspection, not only city and district officials but also private experts in relevant fields and citizen observation groups will participate together.

Gwangju City plans to immediately correct minor issues on-site based on the inspection results and notify the facility management departments of matters requiring repair or reinforcement to ensure that safety risk factors are resolved early.

Park Nam-eon, Director of the Citizen Safety Office of the city, said, “As we face the summer season with expected concentrated heavy rains and heat waves, we will thoroughly conduct safety inspections through public-private cooperation so that citizens can use multi-use facilities and other safety inspection target facilities with peace of mind.”
