[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that it released 3,000 egg-bearing female octopuses into the Deukryang Bay and Yeoja Bay waters over two days from the 22nd to the 23rd to restore fishery resources.
This female octopus release event was promoted as part of the octopus ranch creation project and was carried out to increase octopus resources, which have been declining due to climate change and overfishing.
While releases were previously limited to the Deukryang Bay area, this year the area was expanded to include Yeoja Bay waters.
Boseong-gun has been promoting the "Sea Ranching Project" since 2020 to protect fishery resources.
So far, a total of 8,000 octopuses have been released into the waters of Boseong-gun.
The octopus resource release project has been proven effective as it led to an actual increase in octopus auction volumes.
Before the project began, in 2019, the octopus auction volume in Boseong-gun was 176 tons, but after the project started, it increased to 273 tons in 2020 and 219 tons in 2021, confirming the growth of resource quantities.
Boseong-gun releases egg-bearing female octopuses during the closed season after mating them at the seedling hatchery.
Each egg-bearing female octopus lays between 100 and 160 eggs. The hatched juvenile octopuses grow into mature octopuses after one year.
A Boseong-gun official stated, "For continuous strengthening of fishery competitiveness and development of the local fisheries industry, resource increase must be the foundation. To protect the sea, fishermen themselves must comply with the Fisheries Act, including the closed season (6.21.~7.20.) and minimum catch size regulations, and work hard to prevent marine pollution." He added, "In 2023, we secured a 5 billion KRW scale Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries project for octopus spawning and habitat creation, and we will continue to lead sustainable fishery resource management."
Meanwhile, to create a sustainable fishery environment, Boseong-gun has been continuously promoting fish seed release projects, releasing cockles, black porgy, spotted sea bass, and shrimp into seawater areas, and eel, sweetfish, and Korean perch into freshwater areas.
