[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gyeonggi Province will intensively crack down on illegal activities in rivers and streams through joint city and county operations for two months starting in July.

The inspection targets include 251 valleys and rivers in 25 cities and counties, such as Baegun Valley in Pocheon-si and Jojongcheon in Gapyeong-gun, where illegal activities have occurred, including illegal dumping and abandonment of garbage and waste, unauthorized installation of illegal facilities, and illegal business activities.

The province will implement a dedicated inspection system for rivers and valleys, forming 18 inspection teams consisting of provincial and city/county officials and river valley guardians, operating surveillance networks against illegal activities not only on weekdays but also on weekends and holidays.

Since June, a resident voluntary reporting system for illegal river activities using QR codes has been introduced, establishing a system that allows local residents and the private sector to participate in monitoring illegal activities.

Additionally, anonymous reporting will be accepted to prevent unfair acts that generate undue profits through illegal activities.

In particular, with the application of the Ministry of Environment's "Guidelines for Managing Illegal Activities in Rivers (February 2022)" starting this year, crackdowns and processing are expected to accelerate.

Bang Hyun-ha, Director of the Construction Bureau of the province, said, "As some merchants recently look for opportunities to commit illegal acts, we will strive to eradicate illegal activities," adding, "We will also work to create sustainable clean valleys during the 8th local government administration."
