[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] University presidents gather in one place to discuss higher education policies and issues such as university financial problems and regulatory reform.
The Korea Council for University Education (KCUE) will hold a Summer University Presidents Seminar under the theme "Directions for the Development of University Education and KCUE's Tasks" from the 23rd to the 24th at the Inter-Burgo Hotel in Suseong-gu, Daegu, with 133 university presidents attending.
Hong Won-hwa, chairman of KCUE, explained, "The new government has presented policy directions such as university evaluation and regulatory reform, flexibilization of academic systems, and improvement of failing and marginal universities, but national-level support policies to resolve university financial problems were omitted. It also proposed strengthening local governments' authority over universities, which undermines university autonomy, and did not present policies for win-win cooperation between universities and local governments for regional balanced development."
Chairman Hong emphasized, "Since the new government's higher education policies do not present specific details for each task, causing confusion, it is time to unite efforts to ensure that the new government's higher education policies are established in the right direction."
The keynote lecture will be delivered by Hwang Hong-gyu, a professor at Seoul National University of Science and Technology and former expert member of the Presidential Transition Committee, on the topic "Yoon Suk-yeol Government's National Philosophy and Higher Education Policy Directions." In the "Dialogue with the Ministry of Education," Vice Minister Jang Sang-yoon and officials from the Higher Education Policy Office and directors will participate as panelists to share opinions with university presidents on the Ministry of Education's policy promotion directions.
