The selected chairman, Shin Seok-chul (77), is a veteran who served in the Baekma Unit deployed to Vietnam in 1970. Since 1997, he has supported free meal services for the homeless and, since 2015, has been active as the chairman of Chamjoeun Chingudeul, actively participating in volunteer activities at disaster sites, contributing to local and social development.
Hwang Dong-hyun (75), captain of the Yeongdeungpo District Mobile Unit of the Vietnam Veterans Association, is a descendant of independence activist Hwang Soon-mo (leader of the Gwangyang Uibyung in Jeonnam) and a national veteran who participated in the Vietnam War. Since 2004, he has devoted himself to community development by practicing volunteer work and good deeds such as delivering free meals to elderly people living alone. Lee Tae-jo (75), a representative, is a child of a fallen soldier who served in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970, was wounded in battle, and was discharged as a Marine non-commissioned officer. As a role model in exemplary social life, Lee has elevated the status of national veterans through local volunteer activities as a member of the Fallen Soldiers' Families Association since 2008, establishing a trusted image of veterans.
In addition, the other commendation recipients, proud and dignified national veterans, were selected for their significant roles in promoting the rights and status of national veterans through dedicated volunteer activities for community development and welfare. The commendations for the exemplary national veterans selected this time will be presented together with government awardees at the end of June by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
Meanwhile, Mayor Oh Se-hoon held a meeting at Seoul City Hall on the same day, inviting representatives of 12 veterans' organizations in Seoul to express his gratitude. Gu Jong-won, Director of Welfare Planning at Seoul City, said, "Veteran affairs start with remembering those who sacrificed for the country and their history," adding, "Seoul City will spare no effort to ensure that your sacrifice and dedication become a source of pride and that you continue to live a life that is not forgotten and is respected by all citizens."
