[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province will provide free air conditioner installation to 790 low-income elderly living alone households in the province.

Gyeonggi Province announced on the 16th that it will spend over 630 million won to support the installation of cooling devices (air conditioners) for elderly living alone households receiving basic livelihood benefits or belonging to the next-lowest income bracket, who are relatively more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses among the energy-vulnerable groups in the province, in cooperation with 23 cities and counties through the 'Heatwave Response Energy Welfare Support Project.'

This air conditioner installation project started in Icheon City on the 10th and aims to complete installations by the 31st of next month. Seven cities, including Namyangju City, where applications have not yet closed, are still accepting applications.

The province will not only support air conditioner installation but also conduct free electrical safety inspections to ensure the safe use of air conditioners and electrical equipment. The inspections will be carried out in the first half of next year, one year after the air conditioner installation, in cooperation with the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation and the Korea Electrical Engineers Association.

Previously, the province has been conducting electrical safety inspections since last month for 829 households where air conditioners were installed last year.

A provincial official emphasized, "Air conditioners are essential for elderly people vulnerable to heat-related illnesses to overcome the hot summer," adding, "We will continue to prepare various support measures to eliminate welfare blind spots for energy-vulnerable groups."
