[Gokseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Cha Jongseon] Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that Geunchon Village and Yeonbong Village in Samgi-myeon have been newly designated as organic ecological villages in Jeollanam-do.

Jeollanam-do has been designating and fostering areas suitable for practicing eco-friendly agriculture as organic ecological villages.

The purpose is to spread organic farming while utilizing the entire village as an organic farming experience site, creating a rural tourism attraction.

With this designation as organic ecological villages, Geunchon Village and Yeonbong Village in Samgi-myeon will receive various supports including the issuance of designation certificates.

First, they will be given priority when applying for facilities and equipment related to production, processing, distribution, and experience necessary for expanding organic farming.

They also qualify to apply for the 2023 Organic Ecological Village Development Project, worth 500 million KRW per location, and the Organic Ecological Village Revitalization Project, which provides 20 million KRW in support.

An organic ecological village refers to a village composed of more than 10 households practicing eco-friendly agriculture.

Additionally, the certified area for eco-friendly agricultural products must be at least 10 hectares (with an organic farming ratio of 30%), and the willingness of village members to practice eco-friendliness is important.

The county submitted an application in April to have Geunchon Village and Yeonbong Village designated as organic ecological villages.

After document screening and expert field evaluations, the designation was finally confirmed this time.

In the case of Geunchon Village, the certified area for eco-friendly agricultural products is 27 hectares, accounting for 48.2% of the 56 hectares of cultivated land.

Also, most of the eco-friendly farms in the village have received organic certification, preserving the eco-friendly agricultural ecosystem well.

In Yeonbong Village, 84% (21 out of 25 farms) are eco-friendly farms.

The certified area for eco-friendly agricultural products is 15.9 hectares. They mainly cultivate rice, taro, and corn, and plan to continuously maintain and expand eco-friendly certification.

A Gokseong-gun official said, “We will strive to ensure that villages practicing eco-friendly agriculture and preserving the agricultural environment well continue to be designated as organic ecological villages. We ask the two newly designated villages to thoroughly manage eco-friendly agriculture so that they can increase income through the spread of organic farming.”
