"Vienna Sausage" is a side dish that makes you want to finish a bowl of rice just by hearing its name. Even before taking a bite of the springy sausage, there’s excitement wondering if it will make a “crunchy♪” sound. When the juice bursts out, you pretend to be a gourmet asking, “I wonder what the meat content of this sausage is?” As a self-proclaimed sausage connoisseur, DrinKit selected Vienna sausage as the first item in its new series [DrinKit Pick]. Preferring sausages with over 90% pork content, we chose four candidates and tasted them by direct comparison.
This product boasts a plump and large appearance with a pork content of 90.52%. Since it is a side dish often cooked not only for adults but also for children, it was made without preservatives. Perhaps because of this, it has a lighter pink color compared to other Vienna sausages. Even when lightly fried with a bit of oil to make it delicious, it offered a soft texture rather than bursting. Possibly due to reduced saltiness, the moist and tender texture was more impressive than the original Vienna flavor. It was unanimously agreed to be perfect as a Vienna sausage for kids!
A Vienna sausage made with 91.4% domestic pork. This is exactly the sausage we all know. Its small and cute size is just right for one bite. It looks like the sausage that mom would quietly take out from the deep fridge and grill when you complained about side dishes as a child. The taste is just the same. It can remind you of the joy of sneaking an extra piece while watching your siblings. If you miss the unique taste and aroma of Vienna sausage, this is highly recommended. Back then, I didn’t even dip it in ketchup to eat more, but now I’m an adult who can eat as much as I want.
Since this brand is famous for kielbasa sausage, we had high expectations and included it as a candidate. It contains 92.19% pork and the nuttiness of perilla oil, creating a richer flavor. It also contains healthy plant-based omega-3. When you take a bite and savor it, you get a salty umami taste with a subtle aroma of perilla oil. Although not quite like kielbasa sausage, you can enjoy a juicy and springy texture. It is plump and somewhat elongated, making it good for taking two bites.
Pork is best when it’s from Jeju! This sausage uses a generous 96.08% of Jeju pork. Among the four candidates, it has the highest pork content. Expecting a Vienna sausage with a somewhat dark color reminiscent of Jeju black pork, the inside was actually a light pink. When grilled in oil until the skin bursts, it produced a Vienna sausage full of rich smoky aroma and juicy meat. The elastic skin that makes a crunchy sound was delicious, and even the chewing sound was satisfying. It’s great as a side dish for rice, but if grilled over charcoal while camping, it would be the perfect Vienna sausage.
