[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Oh Hwan-joo] Muan County in Jeonnam will designate and operate a protected water area of 200 hectares at four sites in the Tando Bay waters from next month until July to foster the mudflat octopus, a representative local seafood resource.
Since 2007, the county has been operating protected water areas during the octopus spawning season every year to prevent indiscriminate harvesting of mudflat octopus and to protect spawning and habitats, contributing to the stable income increase of local fishermen.
With the designation of the protected water area, all fishing activities within the protected waters are prohibited during this period, and fishing boat operations are also banned.
For stable management of the protected waters, the county installed markers and signboards at the boundaries of the protected waters for easy recognition by fishermen and plans to deploy fishery patrol boats at all times to guide fishing activities and fishing boat operations.
Park Hong-yang, Director of the Marine Fisheries Division, said, “We are encouraging voluntary participation of fishermen in octopus ranching and spawning and habitat creation projects to foster the Muan mudflat octopus resources,” adding, “The county will make efforts to continue the reputation of Muan mudflat octopus through active support.”
