[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] Genesis BBQ Group announced on the 27th that its participatory ESG activity with family franchises and headquarters, "I Love Africa," is creating positive influence and hope by developing wells in arid lands.
Since September 2018, BBQ has partnered with the nonprofit organization "I Love Africa" to support well (drinking water) development, living environment improvement, and child and women welfare projects in the African region.
"I Love Africa" is BBQ's representative social contribution activity that provides tangible benefits to beneficiaries, practicing global solidarity beyond borders and realizing the company's ESG management motto.
In the first quarter, BBQ used funds raised to support the development of wells for clean water supply in the Kajiado County area of Kenya and the installation of water tanks supplying the main water source in the Makare slum. Additionally, as part of economic and livelihood support projects, BBQ sponsored sewing machines and training for women’s economic activities in the Shauri Moyo area of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, and provided emergency food aid in the Kibera and Athi River slums. In the medical support sector, efforts included jigger eradication and treatment at local elementary schools and healthcare support projects at local medical clinics. Support was also provided for orphan and child education in slums, as well as soccer balls and uniforms for youth.
Meanwhile, the funds for "I Love Africa" are raised through a matching fund system where both the family franchises and headquarters each donate 10 KRW per BBQ chicken ordered by customers, totaling 20 KRW per chicken. Since 2018, the cumulative funds delivered have reached approximately 1.67 billion KRW.
