[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Hyun-ji] Kim Eun-hye, the People Power Party candidate for Gyeonggi Province governor, expressed her welcome on the 26th regarding the Gyeonggi bus union's decision to postpone the strike.
Park Ki-nyung, spokesperson for the People Power Party's Gyeonggi governor candidate, released a statement saying, "We welcome the Gyeonggi bus union's decision to postpone the strike and have confirmed that conflicts can be resolved and a better path can be taken simply by sincerely engaging in dialogue rather than through coercive and violent exercise of power." He added, "If candidate Kim is elected governor of Gyeonggi Province, she will personally sit at the negotiation table."
On the previous day, candidate Kim visited the Gyeonggi Regional Labor Relations Commission, where labor-management negotiations were taking place, to request the withdrawal of the strike. Through Facebook, she stated, "I heard about the wage gap by seniority between semi-public and private buses, as well as the hardships and grievances marked by overwork and unfair treatment," and added, "If the buses stop, the daily lives of Gyeonggi residents stop. Gyeonggi Province must engage more actively in negotiations with the union solely from the residents' perspective."
Bus unions from eight regions nationwide, including Gyeonggi, Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Jeonbuk, Gyeongnam, Changwon, and Jeju, announced a general strike on the 26th and held wage negotiations with management. In Gyeonggi, 36 bus companies, accounting for more than 40% of all buses, decided to postpone the strike after negotiations.
