[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] McDonald's Korea achieved its highest-ever sales last year despite the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. Collaborations with global superstar BTS and the introduction of the 'The BTS Set,' along with the expansion of drive-thru (ordering and receiving inside the car) stores, were credited for this success.
McDonald's announced on the 26th that its sales, excluding franchise stores, increased by 9.7% from the previous year to 867.9 billion KRW last year.
During the same period, operating losses amounted to 27.8 billion KRW, but the deficit was smaller compared to the previous year's operating loss of 48.4 billion KRW. Net loss for the period was 34.9 billion KRW, reduced from the previous year's net loss of 66.1 billion KRW.
McDonald's stated, "Total sales combining directly operated and franchise stores reached 1 trillion KRW, marking the highest sales since entering the domestic market," adding, "Considering the sharp increase in outsourcing costs such as delivery fees due to the rise in non-face-to-face demand, this is a very encouraging achievement."
According to McDonald's, the The BTS Set, launched on the 27th of last month, sold more than 1.2 million units domestically by the 21st of this month.
McDonald's plans to open a new store in Jeju Island in June and intends to accelerate the expansion of domestic stores going forward.
