[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] Samsung Display's OLED for Samsung laptops has been evaluated as a clear display without 'light bleeding' by a global certification body.
Samsung Display announced on the 26th that its laptop OLED was recognized as a 'Halo Free' display by UL, a global certification organization. The 'halo' appearing on displays is a light bleeding phenomenon where the edges of bright objects appear white and blurred in images with high contrast, similar to a crescent moon in the night sky.
In an internal evaluation of the 'degree of light bleeding (halation)' conducted by Samsung Display, the self-emissive OLED showed 0.00%, indicating no light bleeding at all, while LCDs showed noticeably visible light bleeding. Especially, when assuming multiple people viewing the laptop together, the degree of light bleeding was evaluated at 45 and 60 degrees from the side. OLED showed no light bleeding at any angle, but for LCDs, the light bleeding worsened by 3 to 8 times as the viewing angle increased compared to the front view.
Lee Ho-jung, head of product planning at the Small and Medium Display Business Division, explained, "Self-emissive OLEDs, which drive each pixel individually, turn on pixels only in the image display area while the rest remain completely off, so light bleeding phenomena like 'halo' do not occur." He added, "Light bleeding becomes more noticeable as the screen size increases, and OLED is the optimal solution suitable for large-screen IT devices such as laptops and tablets."
