Yeosu City Launches Full-Scale Sales of Its First Local Specialty Liquor, 'Geumodo Bangpung Makgeolli'

High 7.7% Inclusion Rate of Bangpung...Expectations for Market Expansion and Tourism Commercialization

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do announced on the 25th that it has completed the expansion of production facilities for its first local specialty liquor, ‘Geumodo Bangpung Makgeolli,’ and has begun full-scale sales.


Bangpung, well known as a health food, is recorded in the Donguibogam as “treating 36 types of wind diseases, improving the five internal organs, dispelling wind from the pulse, and curing gout and dizziness.”


Bangpung grown in Geumodo, the nation’s largest Bangpung production area, is considered the best in taste and quality as it grows under the clean sea breeze of the Dadohae region.


‘Geumodo Bangpung Makgeolli’ is produced and sold by ‘Geumodo Seommaeul Bangpung Agricultural Corporation,’ located in Daeyu Village, Yusong-ri, Nam-myeon.


It was developed with support for manufacturing facilities and equipment after being selected for Yeosu City’s local agricultural specialty rural convergence industry project.


‘Geumodo Bangpung Makgeolli’ is a raw makgeolli with 7.7% juice extracted from Bangpung leaves added, and is produced in two types: 750ml with 6% alcohol content and 500ml with 10% alcohol content.


The agricultural corporation continuously researched by consulting makgeolli experts and visiting breweries in other regions to harmonize the taste of Bangpung and makgeolli, resulting in the current Bangpung Makgeolli.


It is available on major portal sites and shopping malls with delivery orders possible, and plans are underway to sell it in marts and restaurants through contracts with specialized liquor distribution companies.


Visitors to the Geumodo brewery can also enjoy Bangpung seafood pancakes and dried Bangpung greens along with the makgeolli.


A city official said, “Yeosu Geumodo is the nation’s largest Bangpung production area, harvesting leaves from February to April for use as greens,” adding, “The production of makgeolli is expected to expand the market for Bangpung, increase added value, and promote it as a tourism product.”
