[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Dongwoo Lee] The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 25th that it will conduct a joint inspection of fishing vessel shipyards for four months starting on the 26th to eradicate illegal construction and modification of fishing vessels.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries judges that illegal construction or modification of fishing vessels reduces their stability, increasing the risk of accidents at sea. Therefore, it conducts annual joint inspections of fishing vessel shipyards together with the Fisheries Management Unit and the Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority.
This year, the joint inspections will begin on the 26th in the Chungcheong and Jeonbuk regions, followed by Jeju (April-May), Busan and Gyeongnam (May), Jeonnam (May-June), Ulsan (June), Incheon and Gyeonggi (July), Gyeongbuk (July-August), and Gangwon (July-August), covering shipyards nationwide.
The joint inspection team will consist of members from the East, West, and South Sea Fisheries Management Units and inspectors from the Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority. They will focus on verifying whether permission for fishing vessel construction or modification has been granted, whether the vessels under construction match the approved blueprints, whether approved fishing vessel equipment is being used, and whether shipboard wiring that has passed preliminary inspection is in use.
Ahn Yong-woon, Director of the Fishing Vessel Safety Policy Division, said, "Through this joint inspection of fishing vessel shipyards, we aim to prevent illegal expansion and modification of fishing vessels and create a safer fishing vessel construction environment that protects the lives and property of fishermen."
