[Muju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Muju County announced on the 25th that it is making every effort to prevent and contain the spread of fire blight disease in fruit trees.

According to the county, with the mandatory implementation of three rounds of pest control this year instead of the previous single round, apple and pear farmers must participate in pest control at the appropriate times.

In particular, during the flowering period, the first treatment is carried out when 10-20% of the flowers have bloomed, and the second treatment is conducted 5-7 days later to effectively prevent fire blight disease.

Accordingly, Muju County has completed the supply of fire blight pesticides (Koside, Serifel) to 959 farms, distributed 2,000 leaflets related to fire blight disease, sent 3,000 text messages, and actively engaged in pest control activities through six agricultural education sessions.

Fire blight disease is a heat-loving bacterial disease that occurs around May to July. Infected trees rapidly wither, and the tissues of leaves, branches, and stems turn black and dry as if burned by fire, making it a plant infectious disease.

Because of its rapid transmission, orchards where this disease occurs require careful attention under the Plant Protection Act, including burying not only the infected trees but also other trees planted within the orchard.

The Muju County Agricultural Technology Center has been conducting detailed inspections of apple and pear orchards, including monitoring for overwintering ulcers of fire blight disease, since December last year, and operates a reporting system for farms with suspected symptoms.

Additionally, intensive monitoring activities will continue until mid-July, and on-site diagnosis will be conducted immediately using diagnostic kits if suspected symptoms appear.
