[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] LG Household & Health Care announced on the 25th that it will implement the ‘Clean Beauty Inside’ system, which defines and measures clean beauty items and standards to actively reflect ESG management policies in products from the cosmetics research and development stage and continuously manage them.
Clean beauty is a newly coined term referring to sustainable cosmetics that customers can use with confidence, such as paraben-free, reduced plastic packaging, and vegan products. It is a globally recognized beauty trend highlighted by the expansion of ESG management, climate change, value consumption of the MZ generation, and the importance of health due to COVID-19.
Last year, LG Household & Health Care established the Clean Beauty Research Institute to systematically and scientifically research and develop clean beauty trends from the perspectives of the global environment, health, and science coexistence, becoming the first in the industry to do so.
Currently, the Clean Beauty Research Institute is studying cosmetic packaging from the 4R perspective (Recycle, Reuse, Reduce, Replace), developing cosmetics using natural-derived ingredients that replace synthetic raw materials, and conducting research on waterless formulations that reduce carbon emissions and energy-saving processes.
Based on this research, LG Household & Health Care independently developed a Clean Beauty Index quantified by classifying four criteria: global environment, human health, honest science, and coexistence with neighbors, adding weighted scores for 12 detailed items. This year, the index will be applied first to clean beauty brands such as belif, Beyond, and The Face Shop, measuring the index for each product, raising standards, and launching products that meet the criteria, with plans to expand to all brands in the future.
