[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] The movie "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" maintained its position at the top of the weekend box office for two consecutive weeks. Newly released Korean films started with disappointing results.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticket sales network, over the past weekend (22nd to 24th), "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" attracted 186,844 viewers, securing the number one spot at the box office. Since its release on the 13th, the cumulative audience has reached 769,001.
"Air Murder," starring Kim Sang-kyung and dealing with the humidifier disinfectant incident, drew 64,844 viewers during the same period, ranking second. The thriller "Anchor," starring Chun Woo-hee and Lee Hye-young, attracted 61,454 viewers, placing third.
The foreign film "The Lost City," released on the 20th, drew 39,696 viewers and ranked fourth, while "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," seen by 37,423 viewers, took fifth place. "Seventeen Power of Love: The Movie" secured the sixth position.
The total number of moviegoers over the weekend was 456,317, a decrease of about 30,000 compared to the previous week’s 484,000. Although there was no visible effect on the first weekend after the lifting of social distancing measures, the atmosphere in theaters is expected to gradually recover as major domestic and international new releases are scheduled to premiere one after another starting in May.
