[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Gwangyang Art Warehouse, reborn as a complex cultural space through a cultural regeneration project at the former logistics warehouse in front of the old Gwangyang Station, is emerging as a hot place in Gwangyang, offering various activities and attractions.

Gwangyang Art Warehouse consists of Media Building A, equipped with a media video room and exhibition hall, and Sogyo-dong Building B, a cultural space for communication, exchange, and companionship. A distinctive feature is that the wooden truss structure of the building is exposed without finishing the interior ceiling to preserve the history of the old warehouse.

In the video room of Media Building A, videos themed "The Present and Future of Gwangyang" are screened: ▲Part 1 Beautiful Name Gwangyang (a video created like an animation background featuring photos of Gwangyang’s tourist attractions, a city beautiful by day and night), ▲Part 2 The Present and Future of Gwangyang through Children’s Eyes (a video produced in collaboration with works by fairy tale author Jeon I-su and drawings by children of Gwangyang). Ten 8K beam projectors capable of projecting the nation’s longest video length (56m wide, 4m high) are installed, allowing viewers to experience vivid images.

The exhibition hall houses the archive of the late photographer Lee Kyung-mo, born in Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do, who is regarded as a leading photojournalist in South Korea. His photographic records, digitized and displayed on a large touch screen, cover Korean cultural heritage, modern architecture, urban development, and daily life. Additionally, 58 cameras he cherished during his lifetime are exhibited, allowing visitors to vividly experience Lee Kyung-mo’s works and cameras.

Sogyo-dong Building B is designed as a cultural space for communication, exchange, and companionship, including a cultural resting area, multipurpose room, and children’s attic. The cultural resting area features a caf? reminiscent of a food truck and murals reproducing artworks by fairy tale author Jeon I-su, giving a kids’ zone vibe right from the entrance.

Here, various programs such as Sogyo-dong Creative Studio, a play and experience space for parents and children, Saturday noon concerts (busking performances), and the Art Warehouse Academy are operated. The space is equipped with a large bookshelf and a train-shaped table, making it a favorite spot for children.

Moreover, moving beyond the cultural resting area to the inner space, there are a nursing room and restrooms, with paintings by Jeon I-su displayed along the connecting corridor, leaving no room for boredom.

The adjoining multipurpose room serves as a cultural sharing space for various cultural and artistic education programs and local young artists. The children’s attic on the second floor is used as a “children’s cultural space” stocked with various fairy tale books for kids.

In this way, Gwangyang Art Warehouse functions as a complex cultural space providing citizens with opportunities to enjoy culture and arts through diverse programs, serving as a cultural landmark of Gwangyang alongside the nearby Jeonnam Provincial Museum of Art.
