[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jin-Hyung Park] On the occasion of the 55th Science Day (April 21) and the 67th Information and Communication Day (April 22), nine faculty and staff members, including Professor Emeritus Lee Seon-gyu of GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, President Kim Gi-seon), were selected as recipients of the government awards for the promotion of science and technology and ministerial commendations for their contributions to outstanding research achievements and the advancement of science and technology.
Professor Emeritus Lee Seon-gyu of the Department of Mechanical Engineering has served as vice president, president, and editor-in-chief of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering since January 2013. He contributed to establishing the Asian Society for Precision Engineering and enhancing the international status of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering. He was recognized for nurturing and producing world-class talents in the field of ultra-precision manufacturing machinery and was awarded the Science and Technology Medal, Ungbi Medal.
The Science and Technology Award was given to Professor Jeong Young-joo of the Department of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering for his contributions to the development and commercialization of fiber optic gratings and sensors, as well as Wolfram language-based symbolic computation software, advancing science and technology.
Additionally, ▲ Professor Ko Do-gyeong of the Department of Physics and Optical Science, who dedicated himself to education and research in the optical field and contributed to establishing technologies in high-power lasers and advanced optical technologies, and ▲ Professor Jeong Geon-young of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, who made significant contributions through vigorous research activities and leading the entry of Nano Convergence, Korea’s first nano-related international journal, into SCI (Science Citation Index) with a high citation index (8.526), received the Presidential Citation.
The Prime Minister’s Citation was awarded to ▲ Professor Kim Geun-young of the Department of Physics and Optical Science for his contributions to the development and expansion of theoretical physics, humanities-convergent science education, and educational innovation, and ▲ Professor Lee Heung-no of the Department of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering for his leading role in pioneering new fields such as sensor intelligence and machine learning.
The Minister of Science and Technology Promotion Citation was awarded to ▲ Professor Jeon Chang-deok of the Department of Life Sciences, a leading scholar in immunology T lymphocyte research who currently leads a nationally designated creative research group in immune cell therapy and has greatly contributed to the global growth of Korean immunology as president of the Korean Society for Immunology through hosting international academic events, ▲ Professor Yoo Woon-jong of the Department of Physics and Optical Science for his contributions to innovation in university science education, popularization and expansion of science, and interdisciplinary research in complex systems, and ▲ Kim Yong-ryeol, Chief Administrative Officer, for his contributions to selecting future science and technology talents with potential and giftedness to lead Science Korea, improving admission systems considering socially disadvantaged groups, and selecting future science and technology talents.
