[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Im Taek, the current mayor of Dong-gu, and Kim Byeong-nae, the current mayor of Nam-gu, were respectively selected as the Democratic Party candidates for the Gwangju Dong-gu and Nam-gu mayoral primaries.


The Democratic Party Gwangju Branch announced on the 23rd that Mayor Im was nominated as the Dong-gu mayoral candidate, and Mayor Kim as the Nam-gu mayoral candidate.


Both candidates will challenge for re-election under the Democratic Party banner, following the previous election.


In the Dong-gu mayoral primary, Mayor Im won with 50.66%, defeating Kang Shinki (11.82%), former Gwangju City Planning and Coordination Office Director, Kim Seonghwan (31.15%), former Dong-gu mayor, and Jin Seon-gi (6.36%), a special communication committee member of the Presidential Committee on Balanced National Development under President Moon Jae-in.


In the Nam-gu mayoral primary, Mayor Kim, who received 68.36%, defeated Kim Yongjip (17.47%), chairman of the Gwangju City Council, and Park Gisu (14.17%), former head of the Gwangju Joint Headquarters of the Political Special Advisory Group under former presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung.


The primaries were held from the 21st to the 22nd through a public participation primary (50% party members, 50% general citizens).
