[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Kim Jin-tae, the People Power Party candidate for Governor of Gangwon Province, announced a serious showdown with Lee Kwang-jae, the Democratic Party candidate, saying he wants "to receive the choice of the people of Gangwon Province."
On the 23rd, Kim Jin-tae held a nomination press conference at the People Power Party Gangwon Provincial Office and stated, "I want to have a great competition with candidate Lee, who is the same age, to see who can truly work for Gangwon Province."
When asked about his comparative advantage over candidate Lee, he briefly struck at Lee by saying, "I have served in the military and have no criminal record."
Kim reaffirmed his pledges to "attract a Samsung Electronics semiconductor factory to Wonju" and "attract the Bank of Korea headquarters to Chuncheon."
He said, "There are no large companies in Gangwon Province. That is why I made a pledge to attract a Samsung Electronics semiconductor factory to Wonju," adding, "I will make sure to attract it to the Buroon National Industrial Complex in Wonju."
He continued, "I will attract the Bank of Korea headquarters to Chuncheon to continue establishing Gangwon Province's administrative center and its status as a leading city," and stated, "If elected governor, I will start immediately."
In this primary, Kim Jin-tae received a total vote share of 58.29%, while Hwang Sang-mu, with additional points as a political newcomer, received 45.88%.
Previously, Kim was 'cut off' from the primary due to past remarks about the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement and the Buddhist community, but he gained the opportunity to participate in the primary through a hunger strike and a public apology.
Kim is a politician who served two terms in Chuncheon, graduated from Chuncheon Seongsu High School and Seoul National University. In this presidential election, he served as the special chairman for Lee Jae-myung's corruption verification.
Meanwhile, candidate Lee Kwang-jae conveyed via SNS on the same day, "Congratulations to candidate Kim Jin-tae. Thank you very much to candidate Hwang Sang-mu. Let us make Gangwon Province not a battleground for the ruling and opposition parties, but a place of unity and hope."
