People Power Party's Changwon Mayor Candidate Hong Nampyo Confirmed, to Clash with Democratic Party's Incumbent Mayor Heo Seongmu

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Hong Nampyo, former head of the Science and Technology Strategy Headquarters at the Ministry of Science and ICT affiliated with the People Power Party, will run as the candidate for mayor of Changwon, Gyeongnam, in the June local elections.


The People Power Party Central Party Nomination Management Committee announced the results of the primary elections for metropolitan and special mayoral candidates at a press conference at the National Assembly on the morning of the 23rd.


Among the original nine preliminary candidates, Kim Sanggyu, former Administrator of the Public Procurement Service, Jang Donghwa, former member of the Gyeongnam Provincial Council, Cha Jumok, former Secretary-General of the People Power Party Gyeongnam Provincial Party, and Hong Nampyo, former head of the Science and Technology Strategy Headquarters at the Ministry of Science and ICT, competed in the primary election over two days from the 21st to the 22nd.


Candidate Kim Sanggyu received 32.65%, candidate Jang Donghwa 25.39%, candidate Cha Jumok 18.24% support, while candidate Hong Nampyo was selected as the final candidate with 35.00% support.


The primary election results reflected 50% each from valid votes of responsible party members and public opinion polls targeting the general public.


Candidate Hong is expected to compete for the next mayoral position against current Changwon Mayor Heo Seongmu of the Democratic Party of Korea in the nationwide local elections this June.


On the same day, the People Power Party Nomination Committee announced that Hong Junpyo, member of the National Assembly, was selected as the candidate for mayor of Daegu; Kim Jintae, former member of the National Assembly, for governor of Gangwon; and Heo Hyangjin, former president of Jeju National University, for governor of Jeju.


The candidates for mayor of Suwon, Goyang, and Yongin were respectively decided as Kim Yongnam, former member of the National Assembly; Lee Donghwan, preliminary candidate; and Lee Sangil, preliminary candidate.
