[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Ant?nio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, is scheduled to visit Moscow, Russia on the 26th (local time) to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
UN Deputy Spokesperson Eri Kaneko announced this plan on the 22nd. Secretary-General Guterres will arrive in Moscow on the 26th, hold working-level consultations and a luncheon with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and then meet with President Putin.
This will be the first contact between President Putin and Secretary-General Guterres since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24th.
Deputy Spokesperson Kaneko stated, "The Secretary-General hopes to discuss what can be done to urgently bring peace to Ukraine," adding, "The goal is to discuss immediate measures that must be taken to stop the gunfire."
Secretary-General Guterres called for a four-day 'humanitarian ceasefire' in observance of the Russian Orthodox Easter, but it has not yet been accepted. Since Guterres stated that this invasion violates the UN Charter, President Putin has not answered his calls.
