[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] A private investigator who sold personal information to Lee Seokjun, who visited the home of a woman under protection and killed her family, was sentenced to prison in the first trial.

On the 21st, Judge Shin Seongcheol of the Criminal Division 12 at the Seoul Eastern District Court sentenced Yoon (36), who was indicted for violating the Personal Information Protection Act, to one year in prison.

Yoon is accused of violating the Personal Information Protection Act by selling personal information 52 times since July 2020 and attaching a tracking device to vehicles to provide location information. In December last year, he received 500,000 won from Lee Seokjun, who contacted him through a portal site, and provided the victim's home address. Lee Seokjun went to the address received from Yoon and committed crimes including killing the victim's family.

At the sentencing hearing held last month, the prosecution requested a two-year prison sentence. Yoon's side said, "Please consider that we provided the victim's home address but did not know that a murder would be committed."

On this day, the court stated, "The amount of personal information Yoon has provided to third parties is not small, and it includes sensitive information such as addresses and resident registration numbers, which poses a risk of crime. Although there was no intention to use it for crime, a crime actually occurred, and Yoon bears some responsibility for it."

However, the court also noted, "Yoon has admitted all the crimes and confessed, and has actively cooperated with the investigative authorities."
